The Bonaventura Press specialises in books about the history of the Spanish island of Menorca. It was founded in 1995 by Janet Sloss to promote a greater awareness of the three British occupations of the island in the 18th century. Based on research in the major libraries in London, Paris and Menorca, they are a biography of the legendary British governor, Richard Kane, followed by “A Small Affair”, an account of the seven-year occupation by France in the middle of the century, and lastly “Exit Britannia”, a description of Britain’s third and final occupation between 1799 and 1802. This includes an account of Admiral Horatio Nelson’s visit to the Port of Mahon. Menorca or Minorca? Even the inhabitants are not sure, or at least not consistent. Minorca seems to have been used in historical times, while Menorca appears to be more prevalent today.
LATEST NEWS "A New System of Military Discipline for a Battalion of Foot on Action", the British Army's 'bible' in the 18th century, written by Richard Kane, is now FREE to download from here.
